Daniel García-Peña: Bogotá’s new Director of International Relations

After his role as the the debate leader for Gustavo Petro’s campaign, Bogotá’s newly elected mayor, Daniel García-Peña has been appointed as Bogotá’s new Director of International Relations. With this position, his main task will be to find international cooperation and become a sort of District Foreign Ministry.

García-Peña majored in history at the Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, worked as a professor and director of the History Department of the Universidad de Los Andes, worked as a professor of Political Science in the Nacional, and as as journalist and columnist in various topics for El Espectador.

Between 1995 and 1998, he was the High Commission for Peace in the Ernesto Samper government. Later, he became the director of Planeta Paz, a moderate left wing NGO, from which various members later formed the Frente Social y Político.

In this movement, he led “Lucho” Garzón’s failed presidential campaign in 2002 and his successful campaign to become the mayor of Bogotá in 2003.

As the Director of International Relations, he will be responsible for implementing international cooperation strategies focused on improving the city’s level of competition.

This will involve projecting Bogotá’s image on international stages to promote its participation in city based networks, and promoting academic and cultural events, among other important tasks.
